Pal 1 - Pumpkin Sale

Description: The ISU glass classes held a pumpkin sale. There were a wide range of pumpkins in a range of color, side, and type. You could see the different techniques used for each one. It was also the first time I saw the glass area and found it really interesting.

Rational: I found the form of the pumpkins very interesting as well as the fact that there were not two of the same pumpkins. This was also an opportunity to meet some ISU glass students and to hear about the classes and programs. I would go to this event again. I think the ability for students to not only learn the skills from this project but to be able to show and sell their work to the community is very important.

Pal 1 - Grad Student Gallery

Description: I attended the grad student gallery at the start of the year. The gallery was in NAME and contained the artwork of three grad students. Two students were painters and one was a digital artist. The picture attached was the piece that I really enjoyed.

Rational: I really enjoyed Madelyn Turner's and Kitty Davis' work. I was lucky enough to have a course with Madelyn where she talked about some of her work and the process she takes. While her work appears abstract and simple, the closer you look the more detail and hidden images you see. Overall the MFA Gallery was an introduction of the Grad students and going allowed me to connect with their work.

Description: The NAEA sponsored the annual poster sale. I volunteered for an hour there to receive NAEA points as well as a free poster. I spent time working with others to refill folders with posters when they were running low or empty.

Rational: This was an opportunity to receive points for NAEA. I wanted to be more involved in NAEA this wear and this was an easy and fun opportunity. It was also a chance to meet and get to know other NAEA members who were helping at the sale. This was a very important fundraiser for NAEA and helping ensures that it will continue to be a fundraiser for future years.

Pal 2 - Festival ISU Table

Description: The NAEA had a table at the festival ISU the first week of classes. There I worked with students to create fun book marks and to inform them about what NAEA was and what we did. We told them about our meetings and the events that we hold.

Rational:  This was a good opportunity to meet and talk to students from different majors as well as encourage and inform students about art education and NAEA and what we do. It was also an opportunity to receive points for NAEA which could be used for future conferences

Saturday Classes Week 1 - 3

Description - Weeks 1-3 I worked with classmates to design and teach a lesson to six 3rd graders. Our big idea was biodiversity in the ocean and ocean conservation. We taught students about different fish in the ocean and the different parts of the fish. Students then drew their own fish and then created that fish in 3D using clay pinch pots. They then glazed their fish and created a coral reef for their fish using found objects and recycling.
Rational - With this being the first time working with elementary students our own classroom setting was an important and invaluable learning experience. We wanted students to walk away with the knowledge of different types of fish and the basics of clay. Students were introduced to clay (majority for the first time) and were taught basic terms such as leather hard, bone dry, and material names. Students met and exceeded all of our expectations and standards.

Final Project Display                                            Teacher Example                                            Classroom Setup

Saturday Classes Week 4 - 5

Description of Plan - We created a lesson with the big idea of self representation through words or objects. Students would be continuing with print making from the previous week, but this time working with screen printing. Day 1 students would spend time coming up with a design and then transferring the design to their screen for printing. After using screen filler and drawing fluid the projects would be left to dry. Day 2 students would test print their work and then print their final piece onto a t-shirt to wear. Students also were expected to write a short artist statement about the piece.

Rational or Plan - At the age level the students were at we knew that we should do a project that was more personal to students. It was also a more open project because of the student age and ability. We felt overall the project went well and the students were able to complete their work. If we were to do the project again then we would extend the time that students had to work. Overall students met all of the standards that were set and completed each objective.

SATURDAY CLASS CLASSROOM SET-UP DOCUMENTATION
IPTS Standard 4 - Learning Environment - The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal setting. This includes a virtual environment and any learning aids used within a Google Drive.
7D: understands how to organize the instructional environment to maximize students’ learning.

Description - We set up our classrooms with vocab posters for each lesson. We also made posters that contained important information for the lesson. Ex. Parts of the Fish poster were used each day of our lesson. We set up tables for third graders to encourage discussion but also allow for classroom management. We also did not give students materials until that material was needed in order to eliminate distractions.
For the 8th grade room, we had students start in the front of the room to see our slide presentation and to have a small discussion about artists. We then moved to the back of the room to the large tables where they could sit together as a class, but still have enough room to themselves. This allowed for open conversation and for students to share ideas. Finally we decorated with terms that were important for the lesson.

Rational - The biggest concern when setting up the classroom was eliminating distractions. Knowing that whatever was put in front of the 3rd graders would be a cause for distraction we kept all materials in the side of the classroom. We also had students split between two tables to allow for more close and controlled conversation between students. It also helped because we had twin boys who we could separate if needed.
Our 8th grade set up was a challenge because of the placement of the classroom, however we still were able to make class run smoothly. We were able to have more posters and information in the room and allow to pre-set materials onto the tables because of their age it would be less distracting.
